Surat : As the festive season approaches, the Surat Police’s anti-narcotics unit has intensified its efforts to combat the use of drugs at New Year and Christmas rave parties. This first-of-its-kind unit in Gujarat boasts cutting-edge technology: a state-of-the-art drug detection analyzer worth ₹15 lakh. Capable of delivering results within 60 seconds, the device is set to revolutionize drug detection processes in the state.

The analyzer, designed by an international company, is a mobile rapid screening instrument. Its compact size allows for easy transport, making it ideal for field operations. When police suspect someone of drug use, a saliva sample is taken using the device’s dedicated sampler. The sample is analyzed instantly, providing results within a minute—a stark contrast to the earlier method, which required up to seven days for blood sample analysis.

Crackdown on Drug-Fueled Festivities

DCP Rajdeepsinh Nakum of the Surat Special Operations Group (SOG) emphasized the unit’s proactive measures to curb drug misuse. “We are fully prepared to raid venues suspected of hosting drug-laden parties during Christmas and New Year,” Nakum said. “With the help of human surveillance, drones, and this advanced drug detection device, we can efficiently monitor and act against illegal activities.”

In addition to swift drug detection, the machine can simultaneously test multiple samples, making it a critical asset in large-scale operations. This technological advancement positions Surat’s anti-narcotics unit at the forefront of Gujarat’s fight against narcotics.

Beyond Enforcement: Rehabilitation

While cracking down on drug misuse is a priority, the Surat Police are equally focused on rehabilitation. The anti-narcotics unit plans to collaborate with NGOs and community organizations to help individuals overcome addiction. “Our goal is not just enforcement but also to assist addicts in breaking free from substance abuse,” Nakum stated.

The unit is tasked with handling cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. With its comprehensive approach to enforcement and rehabilitation, it aims to create a safer, drug-free community.

A Model for Gujarat

The ₹15 lakh drug detection device is just the beginning. The Surat Police plan to acquire more such machines in the near future to expand their capabilities. The swift testing mechanism and ease of operation make the device a game-changer for on-ground enforcement during events with a high likelihood of drug misuse.
