Kutch : The Kutch administration has officially declared the White Desert and its adjoining areas as a “restricted zone” for private vehicles. Tourists visiting the Rann Utsav will no longer be permitted to enter the White Desert in their private vehicles, a measure aimed at preserving the beauty and ecological balance of the region.

Preserving the White Desert’s Beauty

Kutch, known for its diverse geography, plays a vital role in Gujarat’s tourism industry. The Rann Utsav, an annual cultural extravaganza organized by Gujarat Tourism Corporation Ltd. at Dhordo, draws thousands of domestic and international tourists. However, the influx of private vehicles into the White Desert has posed significant challenges.

Tourists often unknowingly drive their vehicles into the desert, leading to frequent instances of vehicles getting stuck. This disrupts the desert’s pristine landscape and hampers cleanliness and environmental stability. In light of these issues, the administration has taken steps to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Restrictions Imposed by the District Magistrate

Amit Arora, District Magistrate of Kutch-Bhuj, has implemented a ban on private vehicle entry in specific areas under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code-2023. The restricted zone includes:

The area from Sabras Bus Station to the Watch Tower.

The Safed Rann area around the Watch Tower in Dhordo.

Exemptions from the ban apply to government duty vehicles, fire and emergency medical service vehicles, authorized buses, and vehicles approved by the Superintendent of Police, West Kutch, or the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Bhuj.

Penalties for Violation

Violators of this restriction will face penalties under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code-2023. Police officers ranked Head Constable or higher have been authorized to enforce this order, which will remain effective until January 27, 2025.

Why This Measure is Necessary

The restriction is a critical step toward maintaining the White Desert’s natural beauty and safeguarding its environmental health. The measure ensures that tourism activities continue sustainably without harming the unique ecosystem. Visitors can still enjoy the Rann Utsav and its cultural offerings by utilizing authorized transportation options provided by the administration.

Support for Sustainable Tourism

By implementing these restrictions, the Kutch administration demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable tourism. The initiative aligns with Gujarat’s broader goals of promoting eco-friendly tourism practices while enhancing the visitor experience. Tourists are encouraged to cooperate with the new regulations to protect the White Desert for future generations.
