Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad Traffic Police, in collaboration with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), has launched a campaign to address the growing issue of vehicles equipped with unauthorized aftermarket LED headlights. This action follows directives from the Gujarat Transport Department, which earlier banned the installation of such high-intensity lights due to safety concerns.

Concerns Over Aftermarket LED Headlights

The Gujarat Transport Department issued a circular in April 2024 highlighting the dangers posed by aftermarket white LED headlamps. These lights, often chosen for their brightness, can blind oncoming drivers and contribute to road accidents.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sharad Singhal emphasized the seriousness of the issue:

“Aftermarket LED lights are a major safety hazard. Many vehicle owners install these lights without considering their impact on other road users. The intense brightness can disorient or blind drivers, increasing the risk of collisions.”

Campaign Details

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Safin Hasan confirmed that the crackdown began on Monday evening. Traffic police teams are working alongside RTO officials to identify and penalize car owners who have installed these illegal lights.

The campaign specifically targets vehicles with aftermarket modifications. LED headlights that come pre-installed by manufacturers are exempt, as they are designed to meet safety standards and avoid causing excessive glare.

Legal Implications

Using or installing high-intensity aftermarket LED headlights is a violation of Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The act prohibits unauthorized modifications to vehicles that compromise road safety. Offenders will face strict penalties, including fines.

Why the Drive Matters

The campaign aims to ensure safer roads for all users. By addressing the misuse of high-intensity LED headlights, the traffic police seek to reduce accidents caused by impaired visibility for oncoming drivers.

This initiative underscores the importance of adhering to vehicle safety regulations and discourages car owners from making modifications that prioritize aesthetics over safety.

What Drivers Should Know

Vehicles with manufacturer-installed LED headlights are not affected.

Aftermarket high-intensity LED headlights are illegal.

Offenders risk penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.

By enforcing these rules, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police hopes to create a safer driving environment and reduce risks caused by unauthorized vehicle modifications.
