Gujarat : Ahmedabad to Deploy AI Interceptor Vans
The new AI interceptor vans in Ahmedabad are equipped with cameras and software designed to identify common offenses, including overspeeding, helmetless riding, improper lane usage, unauthorized use of the BRTS route, triple riding, wrong-side driving, and talking on the phone while driving.
Ahmedabad : In an effort to streamline traffic management and reduce violations, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled interceptor vans across the city. These advanced vehicles will enhance patrols, especially in areas with heavy traffic or limited signal coverage, and issue e-memos to violators for 14 different types of traffic infractions.
The new AI interceptor vans are equipped with cameras and software designed to identify common offenses, including overspeeding, helmetless riding, improper lane usage, unauthorized use of the BRTS route, triple riding, wrong-side driving, and talking on the phone while driving. Once a violation is detected, the AI system captures an image of the vehicle’s license plate and sends it directly to the traffic control center, where an e-memo is generated and mailed to the offender’s registered address.
Five of these AI-enabled interceptor vans have already been deployed, with plans for expanded patrolling at key intersections such as Shivaranjani, Shyamal, Sola, Gota, ISKCON, and Pakwan circles. These vehicles will also operate in smaller lanes and congested areas as needed, improving oversight in places where fixed CCTV cameras are limited. Currently, Ahmedabad has CCTV surveillance at 212 intersections, but these mobile AI interceptors will provide additional coverage in high-traffic zones and areas with frequent violations.
According to police sources, the AI system is integrated with the Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) vehicle database, enabling real-time identification of violators based on vehicle registration numbers. This data-driven approach allows the AI interceptors to capture images, generate e-memos, and update the traffic control center with precise information, reducing manual interventions and enabling a more efficient process.
The use of AI interceptor vans represents a modern approach to traffic management in Ahmedabad, with the goal of improving road safety and curbing traffic violations citywide.
