Ahmedabad : Tens of hundreds of junior doctors held peaceful demonstrations and protests in all the government medical colleges and hospitals across Gujarat to oppose the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar government hospital. The Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) in Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Rajkot have gone on strike and called for a withdrawal of doctors’ services . However, the emergency services have continued at the government hospitals, while some OPDs are functioning normally in the New Civil Hospital (NCH) in Surat.

There is a long queue of patients outside the OPDs across all the government  hospitals in the State.  On the other hand, doctors working in 18 OPDs at Sayaji Hospital in Vadodara will stay away from attending the medical services, except emergency services. The resident doctors gathered for a protest in front of the respective medical colleges and hospitals across Gujarat.

Rajkot JDA President Sandeep Sharma said that till date the victim families have not got justice in the incident in Kolkata. As per the instructions given by our association, the resident doctors of Rajkot have also joined the strike against this. Our indefinite strike has started today and will continue till justice is served. However, the emergency service has been continued to ensure that the patients do not face any problem.

After the Kolkata rape and murder, on the night of August 14, a mob of 1500 people tried to destroy the evidence concerning the deceased trainee doctor.  Due to which all junior doctor associations of the entire state of Gujarat have gone on strike today.

Out of the total 1,500 resident doctors at the BJ Medical college in Ahmedabad, about 750 doctors joined the strike in a peaceful manner on Friday. While another 750 doctors are providing emergency services to ensure that the poor patients do not suffer due to the strike.

As many as 300 resident doctors of Rajkot protested at the Medical College campus wearing black clothes and holding play cards demanding justice for the ill-fated trainee doctor of Kolkata on Friday.

Doctors raised slogans such as “We want justice”, “Save the saviours” and “Ek do tin char stop the atrocities” in the medical college campus.
