SURAT, GUJARAT :  In a significant crackdown on substandard manufacturing practices, the Surat Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) team conducted raids on two polyester staple fiber yarn companies in Dadra village of Silvasa in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH). The companies, Akshat Fiber and NextGen Fiber, were found violating the BIS quality control code by producing and selling yarn without a BIS license and affixing fake ISI marks on their products.

Senior Director of Surat BIS, S. K. Singh, led the search operations and highlighted the extent of the violations. “Surat BIS conducted a thorough investigation at two yarn manufacturing companies in Dadra village of Silvasa. We discovered that Akshat Fiber and NextGen Fiber were producing and selling polyester staple yarn without the required ISI mark,” Singh stated.

During the raid on May 21, 2024, the team seized a substantial quantity of substandard yarn from both units. From Akshat Fiber, located at Plot No- 265/1/3 Demini Road, Village-Dadra, Silvasa, the team confiscated 204 bales, amounting to approximately 57 metric tonnes of polyester staple fiber. Similarly, 469 bales, or about 126 metric tonnes, were seized from NextGen Fiber Private Limited at Survey No.-118/2,119/2,119/3,119/4, Village-Sili Silvasa.

“The seized yarns were being produced and sold without the necessary BIS license. This is a clear violation of the BIS Act, 2016,” Singh explained. “As per the Polyester Staple Fiber (Quality Control) Order-2022, issued by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, manufacturing, selling, or stocking ISI marked polyester staple fibers without a license is prohibited and punishable under Section 17 of the BIS Act.”

The Polyester Staple Fiber (Quality Control) Order-2022, effective from April 3, 2023, mandates that all manufacturers and dealers must obtain a BIS license to produce and sell ISI marked polyester staple fibers. This measure ensures the quality and safety of the products, protecting consumers from substandard goods.

Local authorities and industry stakeholders have applauded the BIS’s efforts to uphold quality standards in manufacturing. “Ensuring compliance with quality standards is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our industry,” said a leader of the Gujarat Textile Manufacturers Association. “The actions taken by the BIS not only safeguard consumers but also promote fair competition among manufacturers.”

The raid has sent a strong message to manufacturers about the importance of adhering to quality control regulations. The BIS has indicated that further inspections and strict enforcement actions will continue to ensure compliance across the industry.

In light of these developments, both Akshat Fiber and NextGen Fiber now face legal consequences for their violations. The seized products will undergo further examination, and appropriate actions will be taken against the companies for their non-compliance with BIS standards.

The BIS urges all manufacturers to obtain the necessary licenses and adhere to quality control measures to avoid similar repercussions. “We are committed to maintaining high standards and will not tolerate any breaches of the law,” Singh affirmed.
