Ahmedabad : In a significant development, the Ahmedabad cybercrime police have apprehended two suspects, including an activist associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the personal assistant (PA) of Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, in connection with the circulation of a ‘doctored’ video purportedly featuring Union Home Minister Amit Shah advocating for the abolition of reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The video, which went viral on social media platforms, sparked outrage and debate across the political spectrum.

The suspects, identified as RB Bariya, an activist associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Satish Vansola, the personal assistant (PA) of Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, are believed to have played pivotal roles in the propagation of the fabricated footage. Vansola, who oversees the Vadgam office of the Congress legislator, allegedly facilitated the distribution of Amit Shah morphed video through various online channels.

This development comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cautionary remarks regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly during election seasons. Addressing the potential dangers of misinformation and fake videos, Modi emphasized the need for vigilance in combating digital manipulation.

Notably, this incident is not an isolated one. The Mumbai unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police concerning similar deceptive videos targeting prominent political figures. Pratik Karpe, secretary of the Mumbai BJP, registered a case against the social media handle of the Maharashtra Congress (Youth) for disseminating misleading content.

One such video, allegedly posted by the Maharashtra Congress Youth affiliated with the Mahavikas Aghadi coalition, purportedly depicted Union Home Minister Amit Shah advocating for the elimination of reservations for OBCs, SCs, and STs. However, upon investigation, the video was determined to be fabricated, underscoring the dangers of digital misinformation.

In response to these incidents, there has been a growing call for stricter regulations governing the dissemination of content on social media platforms. Critics argue that the unchecked spread of fake news and manipulated videos poses a significant threat to democratic processes and public discourse.

While the suspects in the Ahmedabad case are currently under investigation, their arrest marks a significant step in addressing the proliferation of fake news and digital manipulation in the political landscape.
