GANDHINAGAR :  In a major welfare move aimed at easing the financial burden on soldiers and their families, the Gujarat government has granted complete exemption from Panchayat Tax on one residential house owned or occupied by serving defence personnel, veterans, their spouses and widows of martyred soldiers.

The decision, taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is being seen as a direct gesture of gratitude towards those serving the nation and families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The State Government has amended the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees Rules, 1964, providing the exemption for eligible beneficiaries residing within Gram Panchayat limits across Gujarat.

Under the amended provision, a serving soldier, former soldier, spouse of an eligible defence personnel or veteran, or widow of a martyr can claim exemption on one residential property used as their home.

“This decision is a mark of respect for the soldiers who stand guard at the nation’s borders and for the families who stand behind them. The government also stands with the families of those who protect the nation,” the government said.

The special provision for widows of martyred soldiers reflects the government’s focus on extending welfare measures to families who have lost their loved ones in service to the country.

The exemption is restricted to a single residential property and is intended to provide direct financial relief by removing the Panchayat Tax burden on the eligible beneficiary’s home.

The decision follows a consultation process. The government had published draft amendment rules in the Extraordinary Gazette in December 2025, inviting objections and suggestions from stakeholders. After examining the responses received, the final amended rules have now been notified.

The government has exercised its powers under the Gujarat Panchayats Act, 1993 to notify the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees (Amendment) Rules, 2026.

The amended rules will come into effect from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.

The move is expected to provide a modest but direct financial benefit to defence personnel, veterans and families of martyrs while reinforcing the state’s commitment to their welfare and dignity.
