VALSAD :As the monsoon turns the Sahyadri hills of eastern Valsad into a carpet of green, streams come alive and waterfalls begin tumbling through the valleys. Among them, Ganesh Waterfall near Makadbandh village in Dharampur taluka has emerged as a popular monsoon destination, offering visitors a mix of dramatic natural beauty, trekking adventure and tribal heritage.

Located between two hills, the waterfall has become a major attraction for tourists exploring what is popularly described as Gujarat’s ‘Mini Kashmir’. The journey itself adds to the experience, with visitors having to trek for nearly a kilometre along a hill trail to reach the waterfall.

For residents, however, Ganesh Waterfall is much more than a tourist attraction.

Kiranbhai, a Makadbandh resident who runs a small stall near the site, said the waterfall has been known by different names over generations.

“Our ancestors called it ‘Pavli Dhodh’. It was also known as ‘Kunda Dhodh’ because the basin beneath the waterfall resembled a traditional vessel used to store paddy. Over time, villagers began calling it Ganesh Dhodh,” he said.

The waterfall also holds deep religious significance for the local tribal community. Makadbandh is predominantly inhabited by the Kukna community, whose traditions are closely linked with nature, mountains and village deities.

At the foothills above the waterfall, villagers worship Mavli Mata at the beginning of the monsoon or during the harvest season, expressing gratitude for nature and water.

The region also carries historical significance. Makadbandh once formed part of the territory of the Dharampur princely state, ruled by the Sisodia Rajputs. Surrounded by dense Sahyadri forests, the area was important for the princely state’s security and forest resources and served as a natural water source for local communities.

The growing tourist footfall is now creating a new economic opportunity for villagers. During the three-month monsoon season, particularly on weekends and public holidays, local residents earn through roadside food stalls and other small businesses. Parking facilities have also emerged as an additional source of income.

Visitors can reach Makadbandh-Shakardhodh via Dharampur, Bhesdara and Phulwadi.

With tourist numbers rising, however, locals and authorities are also urging visitors to protect the fragile surroundings.

The Makadbandh Gram Panchayat conducts cleanliness drives and has installed dustbins at the site. Tourists have been urged to avoid littering and dispose of waste responsibly.

“Keeping this natural beauty clean is itself a form of respecting nature,” locals said.
