Surat : In an unusual incident, the railway police at Surat railway station seized around 1600 kgs of suspected animal meat on March 27th, 2024. The meat was found in 20 parcels that arrived from Mumbai via the Karnavati Express.

Meat Discovered During Routine Check

The suspicious parcels were unloaded from the Karnavati Express when Commercial Inspector Ganesh Jadhav and Deputy Commercial Inspector Anand Sharma noticed something amiss. Upon a preliminary check, they discovered the parcels contained what appeared to be animal meat. They immediately informed the railway police who then took over the investigation.

Further Investigation Underway

All 20 parcels were seized by the railway police. Samples were collected from the meat and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis to determine the exact type of animal and its fitness for consumption. The railway police will take further action based on the FSL report.

First of its Kind

Railway parcels typically contain frozen food items, with fish being a common example. However, this is the first instance of such a large quantity of suspected animal meat being transported via railway parcels from Mumbai to Surat.

Booked Under Fake Names

The investigation revealed that the parcels were booked by a person named Dilawar in Mumbai but addressed to Ayub and Rasool in Surat. The reason for using fictitious names remains unclear.

Railway Police on High Alert

The seizure of this suspicious meat has put the railway police on high alert. They are now more vigilant in checking parcels arriving at Surat station, particularly those originating from Mumbai.

This incident highlights the importance of stringent checks on goods transported via railways to ensure the safety and legality of the contents. The FSL report is awaited to determine the course of further action by the railway police.
