Surat : Social media in Surat has erupted in controversy after a photo emerged showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Sanjeev Kumar examining a development map of Surat International Airport that appears to differ significantly from the official Surat Airport Master Plan 2035. The image, widely shared online, has sparked concerns about potential misinformation presented to the Prime Minister during his visit to inaugurate the airport’s expanded terminal building on December 17th, 2023.

Adding fuel to the fire, an RTI activist who filed a request seeking clarification on which map was presented to PM Modi received a response from the Surat Airport administration stating “the information sought is not specific.” This opaque response has only intensified public suspicion, leading many to question the motives behind the alleged discrepancy.

Missing Crucial Information: What Does the Map Omit?

The map shown to PM Modi reportedly omitted key elements of the Master Plan 2035, raising questions about transparency. Notably absent were details regarding the proposed parallel runway and integrated terminal building – crucial aspects of the airport’s future expansion. Additionally, the map allegedly neglected to address the ongoing demand for land acquisition to extend the existing Dumas RWY 04 runway. Instead, it reportedly focused solely on a potential extension towards the Vesu end (RWY 22) for accommodating only smaller CAT-I Light aircraft.

Who Authorized the Discrepancy? RTI Seeks Answers, Receives Evasive Response

Given the apparent discrepancy, the question of who authorized the presentation of this alternate map takes center stage. The Surat Airport administration, lacking the authority to independently decide what information to present to the Prime Minister, likely received instructions from either the AAI’s Mumbai or Delhi offices. An RTI request was filed to determine the source of the map and the rationale behind its use. However, the administration’s response, stating “the information sought is not specific,” raises concerns about accountability and transparency. This response suggests a potential attempt to obfuscate the issue, leaving the public in the dark.

Misleading the Public and the Prime Minister?

The alleged discrepancy has ignited public outrage, with many accusing the Surat Airport administration of attempting to mislead not just the public, but also the Prime Minister himself. The lack of transparency surrounding the map’s origin and content further fuels this perception. The incident highlights the importance of clear communication and adherence to official plans when dealing with infrastructure development projects of such significance.

Demanding Clarity and Accountability

The controversy surrounding the map presented to PM Modi necessitates a thorough investigation.  The AAI owes the public a clear explanation regarding the rationale behind the alternate map, who authorized its use, and why it deviated from the official Master Plan. Additionally, the RTI process should be strengthened to ensure that citizens can access crucial information without encountering evasive responses. Only through transparency and accountability can public trust be restored.
