Surat : In response to a contempt notice issued by the Supreme Court, Ajay Kumar Tomar, the commissioner of police in Surat, took action by suspending RY Rawal, a police inspector from the Vesu police station in Surat. Businessman Tusharbhai Rajnikantbhai Shah was the subject of allegations of wrongdoing while in police detention, which led to demands for Rs.1.6 crores under duress, prompting the supreme court to take a hard line.

The businessman Tusharbhai Rajnikantbhai Shah was granted anticipatory release by the court, but the additional chief secretary (home), police officers, and an additional chief magistrate of Gujarat were reprimanded by the Supreme Court on January 11 for holding him in police custody. On December 8, 2023, the businessman was granted provisional anticipatory release in a case involving accusations of cheating. A disturbing story of police misbehaviour, however, emerged as a result of what happened next.

A man named Tushar Shah, who lives in Surat, willingly turned himself in to the authorities on December 11 in order to help with the probe. Quite shockingly, he was both detained and freed on bail the very same day. Nonetheless, Shah was held in warrantless detention for four days when the police initiated a remand application on December 13. The abuse of power was a major worry for the Supreme Court, which had previously granted anticipatory release.

Surat police station surveillance video was required to be submitted to the Supreme Court while the businessman was in detention. The police, however, told the judge that the CCTV cameras weren’t working at the time. The criticism on the police’s actions became even more intense as a result of this.

The surat vesu police station’s inspector, RY Rawal, re-arrested Tushar Shah and put him in detention even though the Supreme Court had granted him bail. Ajay Kumar Tomar, the commissioner of police, ordered an internal investigation after the Supreme Court expressed disapproval of the police’s performance.

Commissioner Tomar wasted little time in acting upon the inquiry’s recommendations; Inspector RY Rawal was suspended effective immediately. The suspension highlights the seriousness of the matter and demonstrates the Surat Police Department’s dedication to holding individuals accountable.
