Surat : Surat, the diamond and textile city of India,  has taken the lead in the solar energy revolution in Gujarat. With over 9,500 households installing rooftop solar panels, the city now boasts a collective capacity of 20 megawatts solar panels each, reducing electricity bills to zero for many and earning a staggering Rs 4 crore in government subsidies.

This monumental achievement has been primarily concentrated in the Adajan, Pal, and Rander areas, with more than 5,816 houses participating in the government-sponsored solar panel scheme.

The journey to Surat’s solar prominence began several years ago when the city recognized the potential of harnessing solar power for its energy needs. The government’s proactive approach to incentivize solar adoption played a pivotal role in encouraging residents to switch to clean, renewable energy sources. As a result, Surat has not only significantly reduced its carbon footprint but also set a remarkable example for other cities in the region.

According to official sources, the installation of rooftop solar panels has not only led to significant energy savings but also generated income for households. The 9,500 houses in Surat have collectively earned Rs 4 crore in government subsidies for contributing to the reduction of the city’s electricity demand. This financial incentive has motivated more residents to participate in the solar initiative.

Surat’s transformation into the “Solar Capital of India” is not merely limited to harnessing solar energy but extends to manufacturing solar panels as well. More than 60% of the country’s solar panels are manufactured in the city, making it a hub for solar technology production. Surat’s solar companies collectively produce an impressive 24 gigawatts of solar panels every year, contributing significantly to India’s clean energy goals.

This solar surge in Surat signifies a broader trend of cities across India embracing renewable energy sources to combat climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The success of Surat’s solar program is a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable development, and it sets a commendable example for others to follow.

With Surat leading the way in solar power consumption and manufacturing, it serves as a shining beacon of hope for a greener and more sustainable future not only for Gujarat but for all of India.

“The city’s dedication to solar energy demonstrates that when communities, governments, and businesses work together, they can drive positive change and lead the transition to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy landscape” said an officials from Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
