Surat: In a major boost for frequent flyers in the diamond city of Surat, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has confirmed that the Ministry is committed to providing direct international flights from Surat to Dubai and Hong Kong by the end of 2023.

The announcement comes as a result of a meeting with delegation members from the Surat diamond industry, who were in New Delhi to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), the world’s largest office building.

The eagerly anticipated SDB project is scheduled for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, potentially on either December 17 or December 24. During their visit to the national capital, the diamond delegation, led by Gujarat BJP Chief CR Paatil, took the opportunity to meet with Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss the international status of the Surat airport.

Dinesh Navadia, a member of the SDB managing committee, expressed his excitement about the forthcoming inauguration, stating, “The Diamond Bourse will be inaugurated in December, and Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi has given us the dates of December 17 and 24. With the launch of the Surat Diamond Bourse, there will be a need for international flights to Surat. We made a presentation to PM Modi on this matter, and he advised us to meet Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.”

Navadia further elaborated on their meeting with Scindia, saying, “Jyotiraditya Scindia responded very positively to our request for international flight operations from Surat airport. He was pleased with our presentation and expressed his happiness. Scindia assured us that the Ministry has prioritized international flight connectivity for Surat and that the city can expect direct flights to Dubai and Hong Kong by December 2023 or January 2024.”

The confirmation of direct international flights from Surat to these key destinations has been met with enthusiasm and excitement from the city’s residents and business community. It is expected to significantly boost economic activities, trade, and tourism in Surat, further solidifying the city’s position as a global hub for the diamond industry.

The development holds immense potential for Surat’s growth and prosperity, as it opens up new avenues for business opportunities and strengthens its international connections. Frequent fliers in Surat eagerly await the commencement of these direct international flights, which will undoubtedly enhance travel convenience and connectivity to key global markets.
