Surat : In a remarkable feat, senior journalist Nikhil Shah’s book ‘Heroes of Surat Lockdown’ witnessed an extraordinary reception as 3,000 copies were sold within just one hour of its release.

The highly anticipated book launch event took place at the SGCCI building in Nanpura and was graced by the presence of esteemed personalities, including Union Minister of State for Railways and Textiles, Darshana Jardosh.

‘Heroes of Surat Lockdown’ sheds light on the relentless efforts of officials, leaders, and social workers who selflessly dedicated themselves to the rescue and relief of the people, particularly the migrant workers, during the challenging times of the lockdown.

The event saw a distinguished gathering of individuals who have played pivotal roles in Surat’s journey through the pandemic. Gujarat’s Minister for Education, Praful Panseria, Surat Police Commissioner, Ajay Tomar, Editor of Dhabkar newspaper, Naresh Varia, and former Surat BJP President, Nitin Bhajiawala, were among the esteemed guests who graced the occasion.

Nikhil Shah’s book beautifully captures the desperate events that unfolded during the lockdown period in Surat. It chronicles the extraordinary services rendered by numerous individuals and organizations in the city during the Covid-19 crisis.

The book highlights the outstanding contributions made by Sachin GIDC’s Mahendra Ramolia, Pandesara GIDC’s Jitubhai Vakharia, and Kamalvijay Tulsian, who provided two meals a day to 8,000 workers. Additionally, it acknowledges the efforts of Muskan Family Charitable Trust, led by their unique system of delivering food to 6,000 people in various areas.

The remarkable daily operation by Chanyado’s Bharatbhai Shah, who delivered one lakh food packets, and the distribution of 29 lakh masks for free by Mota Mandir Yuvak Mandal are also commended in the book. Furthermore, it highlights the commendable initiatives by Jitendra Kothari, Jitubhai Vora, Shunilbhai Kothari, Piyushbhai Shah, and Kaushik Rana, which included the distribution of 1,300 tonnes of vegetables and grains to animals and providing food in the walled city areas.

The book provides an in-depth account of how the collective efforts of these unsung heroes successfully navigated the challenges posed by the lockdown. It specifically recognizes the exemplary work and challenges faced by then District Collector, Dr. Dhaval Patel, Surat Police Commissioner Rajendra Brahmabhatt, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Banchanidhi Pani, and Officer on Special Duty, Mahendra S Patel, who valiantly protected the people of Surat throughout the arduous 52-day lockdown period.

Nikhil Shah’s ‘Heroes of Surat Lockdown’ has struck a chord with readers, as evidenced by the overwhelming response during its release event. The book serves as a testament to the resilience and compassion displayed by the people of Surat in the face of adversity.

The author’s meticulous research and storytelling have allowed the tales of these unsung heroes to reach a wider audience, ensuring that their selfless acts are celebrated and cherished. ‘Heroes of Surat Lockdown’ is not merely a book, but a tribute to the spirit of humanity and the power of collective action.
