Gujarat: Khaki Uniform Causes Health Concerns for Women Police Personnel

Surat : In a recent online survey conducted by the Gujarat Home Department, it has come to light that women police personnel across the state are facing numerous health issues due to the mandatory ‘Khaki’ uniform they wear while on duty. The survey, initiated on Saturday, has shed light on the adverse effects of prolonged wearing of the uniform on the well-being of female officers.

The survey has revealed that wearing the Khaki uniform for extended periods has been linked to various health problems, including difficulties in conception, irregular menstruation, stomach aches due to under-eating, and headaches caused by the round cap.

Women police personnel often find themselves standing for hours in tight-fitting uniforms, comprising shirts, pants, shoes, leather belts, and round caps. Particularly in hot weather conditions, this attire poses significant challenges and has been found to contribute to the development of various ailments.

Even female officers assigned to night duty are required to wear pants, shirts, tight belts, shoes, and caps, exacerbating the health issues associated with this uniform. Presently, feeding women police officers are permitted to wear Salwar-Kameez as a relief measure. However, the remaining female force is mandated to wear Khaki pants and shirts while on duty.

During the online survey, women police officers put forth suggestions to address the health concerns they face. They proposed replacing the round caps with flap caps, similar to those worn by senior police officers, and substituting the tight leather belts and uniforms, which often lead to dizziness during summer heat.

Upon completion of the online survey in Gujarat, the Home Department is expected to take proactive measures to address the issues raised by women police officials regarding the Khaki uniform. This may include exploring alternative uniform options that prioritize comfort and minimize health risks.

The survey highlights the need to prioritize the well-being of women police personnel, who play a crucial role in maintaining law and order within the state. By addressing their health concerns and providing more suitable uniform options, authorities can ensure the physical and mental well-being of these dedicated officers, ultimately enhancing their efficiency and job satisfaction.
