Surat : Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home, has directed the Surat police department to apprehend the diamond dealer accused of defrauding a Bhavnagar-based diamond trader out of Rs.1.50 crore.

During their meeting in Gandhinagar on Tuesday, Dinesh Navadia, chairman of the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), and Manish Kapadiya represented the case to the Home Minister. Sanghavi immediately took notice of the situation and directed the Surat police department to apprehend the suspects who were loose in the diamond market.

A diamond broker in Surat contacted a small-time diamond manufacturer from Bhavnagar, according to the case details. He (the diamond broker) informed the diamond manufacturer that a Mumbai-based buyer is ready to close the deal.

When the diamond manufacturer arrived at Surat’s Mahidharpura diamond market, the buyer and the diamond broker were waiting for him. After inspecting the diamond packet, the buyer informed the victim that he is willing to pay Rs 1.50 crore for the diamonds. The accused informed the victim that he would first send the money to Angadia before sending the consignment.

When everything was finished, the pair served tea to the victim and purposefully spilled it on the ground. The cheaters replaced the original diamond packet with synthetic stones when the victim bent down to pick up the spilled cup. Both of the accused quickly vanished from the scene.

The victim realised that the buyer had not requested his Bhavnagar address. He did, however, call the diamond broker on his phone, which was turned off. Despite repeated attempts, the victim was unable to dial the accused’s phone number. When the victim checked the packet on suspicion, he was astounded to find fake diamonds.

The victim, on the other hand, rushed to the Mahidhapura police station to file a FIR against the accused.

“The Surat police department must set an example that no diamond manufacturer or dealer from Surat or other cities will be cheated by the cheater gangs operating in the Mahidhapura diamond market,” said Dinesh Navadia, chairman of IDI. We appreciate Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi’s prompt action.”
