Mumbai : Western Railway has restored the heritage lawn at Mumbai Central and the vintage steam locomotive “Little Red Horse” to preserve the past.

Kshama Misra, WRWWO President, opened this garden. Ashok Kumar Misra, General Manager of Western Railway, Niraj Verma, Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Central Division, Principal Head of Departments, and other senior Headquarters and Divisional officials were present.

After Metro Rail construction, the Engineering Department of Western Railway restored the garden, according to a news release by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer. The area has been beautified with planting, fencing, and a steam locomotive pedestal.

Thakur added that the steam engine “Little Red Horse” was BB & CI Railway’s pride. This steam locomotive represents 19th- and 20th-century progress. Kerr Stuart & Co. in England built this locomotive in 1929. Pratapnagar Workshop maintained it on the oldest Narrow Gauge (NG) Line in Asia, Dabhoi-Miygam Line.

On Mumbai Central Station’s Platinum Jubilee in 1991, it was deactivated after 61 years of service and buried there. Western Railway Mechanical Department restored the steam locomotive. To restore its former grandeur, the corroded sections were carefully restored and painted.

An artificial steam fogging machine and whistle and chugging sounds enhance its charm. Restoration includes fixed electricity for head, tail, and dome lights. In addition to this lawn, the Ashoka Emblem garden at Mumbai Central station’s entrance has been landscaped and reglazed.
