Gandhinagar :  In a dramatic turn of events on Thursday, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kalol municipality, located in the Gandhinagar district, were attacked by irate residents following a heated dispute over the re-tendering of development works. The altercation occurred at the Kalol Nagarpalika premises, where locals stormed into the office of the standing committee chairman, Prakash Vargade, and physically assaulted him and Dinesh Rawal, the husband of BJP councillor Usha Rawal.

Dispute Over Re-Tendering Sparks Violence

Tensions boiled over after the standing committee, led by Vargade, made the decision to re-tender development projects within the municipality. The move angered many residents, who viewed the re-tendering as an unnecessary delay to the much-needed improvements in the area. Frustrations escalated as residents believed the re-tendering process was politically motivated, causing further delays to ongoing development efforts in Kalol.

Sources reported that the confrontation began with a heated exchange between Vargade and a group of residents in his office, quickly spiraling into violence. Video footage of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows the crowd hurling abuses and physically attacking Vargade. Some individuals attempted to throw a chair at him, while others landed blows. Dinesh Rawal was also assaulted during the commotion.

Residents’ Growing Frustration

Local residents, angered by the perceived stalling of municipal development, expressed their discontent with the standing committee’s decision to re-tender. They accused the committee of unnecessarily delaying the approval of previously agreed-upon projects, which had already been given the green light.

“The re-tendering process is just a tactic to delay work. The town’s roads and infrastructure need urgent repairs, and this back-and-forth is only making matters worse,” said one local resident present during the altercation.

The mob’s anger did not subside even after the assault on the municipal leaders. The group proceeded to the office of the municipality’s Chief Officer, where they demanded immediate explanations and vented their frustrations. Despite attempts by municipal officers and councillors to calm the situation, the crowd remained hostile, unwilling to accept the explanations provided.

Police Intervention and Aftermath

The situation eventually settled after the arrival of local police, who intervened to restore order. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and take necessary actions to address both the assault and the grievances raised by the residents.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the tension between the Kalol municipality’s leadership and the local population, who have grown increasingly frustrated with delays in development works. The attack on municipal leaders reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the perceived inefficiency and inaction of local governance, raising concerns about the political atmosphere in the region.
