WhatsApp has officially announced one of its biggest identity updates since the platform launched: usernames. The feature will allow people to communicate without revealing their mobile phone numbers, offering a new privacy-focused way to connect.

The rollout will begin gradually over the coming months, while users in supported regions can already start reserving their preferred usernames.
What Are WhatsApp Usernames?
Instead of exchanging phone numbers, users will be able to share a unique username that others can use to start a conversation.
Once enabled, your username can become your primary public identity on WhatsApp, helping keep your phone number private when interacting with new contacts.
According to WhatsApp, the feature is designed to improve privacy while maintaining the app’s end-to-end encrypted messaging experience.
How the Feature Works
Users will be able to create a unique username through the Account section in WhatsApp Settings.
Key details include:
- Usernames must contain between 3 and 35 characters.
- Every username must be unique.
- There will not be a public searchable username directory.
- People must know your exact username before they can contact you for the first time.
- Users may optionally enable a Username Key, adding another layer of protection for first-time conversations.
If a username is being used, the recipient will see the username instead of the user’s phone number in supported situations.
Stronger Privacy Protection
The primary goal of usernames is reducing unnecessary exposure of phone numbers.
This will be especially useful when:
- Joining large group chats
- Contacting someone for the first time
- Talking to businesses or creators
- Interacting with people without exchanging personal phone numbers
WhatsApp says users will have greater control over when their phone number is visible and to whom.
Username Reservations Begin
Because WhatsApp serves more than 3 billion users worldwide, many usernames are expected to be highly competitive.
To help reduce conflicts, WhatsApp has opened early username reservations before the global rollout is completed.
Users can reserve a username by:
- Updating WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Opening Settings.
- Selecting Account.
- Tapping Username (if the feature is available).
The option is being released gradually, so it may not yet appear for every account.
Businesses and Creators Can Keep Their Existing Identity
WhatsApp also plans to allow businesses, organizations, creators, and public brands to claim usernames that match their existing identities on Instagram and Facebook.
This is intended to provide a consistent presence across Meta’s platforms and make official accounts easier to recognize.
Measures Against Impersonation
The introduction of usernames naturally raises concerns about impersonation and scams.
To reduce abuse, WhatsApp says certain usernames associated with celebrities, government agencies, public figures, and well-known organizations will be restricted or specially protected.
The company also emphasizes that users should only share their usernames with people they trust.
Is WhatsApp Becoming Like Telegram?
Following the announcement, many users on social media compared the feature to Telegram, which has supported usernames for years.
While both platforms will allow communication through usernames, WhatsApp says its implementation is centered on privacy rather than discoverability.
Unlike Telegram, WhatsApp will not offer a searchable username directory or automatically suggest accounts, meaning users must know the exact username before initiating contact.
Rollout Timeline
WhatsApp is introducing the feature in phases:
- Username reservations begin this week.
- The feature will expand gradually over the coming months.
- Users will receive an in-app notification once usernames become available for their account and region.
As WhatsApp continues expanding beyond traditional phone-number-based messaging, usernames represent one of the platform’s most significant privacy-focused changes to date.
