RSS Set to Retain Grip Over Gujarat University as Government Eyes Interim VC

AHMEDABAD : The appointment of Gujarat University’s next Vice-Chancellor is once again highlighting the growing influence of the RSS in shaping leadership at the state’s largest university. With Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta’s tenure ending on June 30, the Gujarat government is expected to appoint an interim Vice-Chancellor, and academic circles believe the decision will largely reflect the Sangh’s preference.

Sources indicate that Ashish Dave, principal of Samarpan Arts and Commerce College in Gandhinagar and widely regarded as being associated with the RSS, has emerged as the leading choice for the interim post. While the government has initiated the formal process to appoint a permanent Vice-Chancellor through a search committee, the immediate appointment is expected to set the tone for the university’s future leadership.

Neerja Gupta, who assumed office on July 1, 2023, has completed her tenure. Although she reportedly sought another term, sources suggest that her chances of reappointment are slim, with both the Gujarat government and influential RSS circles believed to be favouring a change in leadership.

“The interim appointment is expected to reflect the government’s confidence as well as the Sangh’s recommendation, before the permanent Vice-Chancellor is selected,” sources familiar with the process said.

For several years, Gujarat University’s top academic post has largely been occupied by individuals perceived to have the backing of the RSS. Political observers say the state government has traditionally endorsed candidates recommended through Sangh-affiliated academic networks, making the current transition another closely watched development.

Ashish Dave has previously served as principal of Savli Arts and Commerce College and H.K. Commerce College before taking charge of Samarpan College, founded by former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela. While some of his earlier appointments attracted controversy, they were later resolved.

The search committee has already invited applications for the permanent Vice-Chancellor’s post, but observers believe the interim appointment could strongly influence the final outcome.

“The appointment of the interim Vice-Chancellor will be a significant indicator of the government’s long-term choice for Gujarat University’s leadership,” sources said.

Although the state government has not officially announced the interim appointment, all eyes remain on whether the RSS-backed candidate will continue the Sangh’s longstanding influence over the administration of Gujarat University.
