Surat | Gujarat — Surat’s real estate fraternity was left stunned on Sunday after shocking news emerged from the posh Citylight area, where leading builder and Ghelani Group owner Tushar Ghelani allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself with his licensed revolver at his residence in the early hours of February 1. Ghelani was immediately rushed to Mahavir Hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.

The incident occurred at around 2 am, at a time when the Ghelani household was preparing for a joyous occasion. Ghelani’s daughter is scheduled to get married on February 5, and wedding-related rituals were set to begin on Sunday, including the traditional kankotri (invitation card) writing ceremony. Instead of the sound of celebration, the house was jolted awake by a gunshot.

According to preliminary information, family members rushed to Ghelani’s room after hearing the sound and found him injured. He was taken to Mahavir Hospital in a serious condition and admitted to the ICU, where a team of doctors is providing intensive treatment. Hospital sources have indicated that he has been placed on a ventilator and remains in a critical state. The possibility of shifting him to Mumbai via air ambulance for advanced treatment is also being explored.

Ashok Patel Adhewada, a close friend of the family, confirmed the incident and said Ghelani’s condition has shown slight improvement. “This unfortunate incident took place at Tusharbhai’s residence between 1:30 and 2 am. We received a call early in the morning and rushed to the hospital. It is a very difficult time for the family, but by the grace of God, his health is improving. He is currently in the ICU and treatment is ongoing,” Adhewada said. He added that the family would share more information once Ghelani recovers.

The emotional impact of the incident has been visible at the residence, where wedding decorations have begun to be removed. Guests, unaware of the tragedy, have continued to arrive at the house, expecting pre-wedding ceremonies. What was meant to be the beginning of celebrations has instead turned into a scene of silence and concern.

Tushar Ghelani is a well-known and respected name in Surat’s construction and real estate sector. His firm, Ghelani Group (also known as Ghelani Builders), has been active since 1990 and is credited with developing several modern and luxury residential projects across the city. His office is located at Jolly Complex in Parle Point, and he enjoys considerable goodwill in business and social circles.

Police officials from Umra Police Station and senior officers reached both the residence and the hospital soon after the incident. The revolver used in the incident has been seized, and police have begun questioning family members to determine the reason behind the suicide attempt. While initial speculation points to personal or domestic stress, officials have said the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
