Surat | Gujarat — In a move aimed at boosting tourism and city mobility, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched the trial run of an AC double-decker bus service for visitors heading to the newly developed Dumas Sea Face. The rare sight of a double-decker bus returning to Surat’s roads after years left many citizens surprised and curious.
The trial began after the civic body announced plans to operate two air-conditioned double-decker electric buses on an experimental basis. As part of the pilot phase, SMC sourced a special bus from the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) to assess feasibility and public response before final procurement.
Officials said the Standing Committee had earlier approved the purchase of two buses along with drivers and a 10-year comprehensive annual maintenance contract. According to the proposal, the buses will be procured from a Chennai-based manufacturer under pricing and conditions fixed by GSRTC.
“This trial run will help us evaluate demand, route efficiency, and operational requirements before we introduce a permanent service,” a senior civic official said. “The idea is to provide a unique and comfortable travel experience for tourists visiting Dumas.”
Tourism Push or Political Optics?
The introduction of the buses has also triggered political debate as civic elections approach. Critics allege the move is part of a broader attempt to attract voters by showcasing development projects.
Opposition voices claim the timing raises questions. “Suddenly we are seeing a rush of new facilities and trial projects just days before voting. Citizens want basic infrastructure and long-term solutions, not last-minute attractions,” a local political observer said.
Over the past few weeks, the civic body has rolled out multiple initiatives, including metro trial runs, reopening of the long-shut Sabras Garnala, and deployment of a floating toilet system to tackle creek pollution. These developments have been presented as signs of rapid urban progress.
However, many residents say unresolved civic issues continue to dominate public sentiment. “Flooding, traffic, and basic services remain major concerns. Fancy buses alone won’t change the ground reality,” said a resident from the city’s coastal belt.
A Nostalgic Return to City Roads
Despite the political chatter, the double-decker bus has already captured public imagination. Families and commuters gathered along the route to catch a glimpse of the iconic vehicle, a mode of transport that had disappeared from Surat’s roads years ago.
Transport planners believe the service could become a major attraction if successful. “Double-decker buses can transform the journey into an experience, especially for tourists visiting the coast,” said a transport expert.
