SURAT: A powerful boiler explosion at a silk mill in Surat triggered a massive fire, leaving four workers with burns covering 50–55% of their bodies and raising fresh concerns over industrial safety in the city’s manufacturing hubs.
The incident occurred at Krishna Silk Mill on Udhna Road No. 2, where routine operations were underway. The blast sparked panic among workers and people in nearby industrial units as flames spread across the premises. The four injured workers were rushed to Surat’s New Civil Hospital for treatment.
The injured have been identified as Vikas Kadam (34), Suraj (21), Deepak Patil (36) and Karan (34).
Dr Sheetal Kheradiya of New Civil Hospital said the patients had suffered burns over approximately 50–55% of their bodies. Their condition was described as serious, and they are undergoing treatment in the hospital’s burns ward and trauma centre. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone else was injured.
Fire Spreads After Boiler Explosion
Surat Chief Fire Officer Basant Parikh said the fire department received a call about the blaze at around 5 pm. Firefighters initially found a fire involving oil and other materials. Around 6 pm, a boiler explosion intensified the blaze, causing it to spread across the industrial complex.
The scale of the emergency prompted a major firefighting operation, with approximately 15 fire tenders and 80 personnel deployed to control the flames. The fire department subsequently brought the blaze under control, and the situation was reported to be normal.
According to information provided by the mill owner, three to four people suffered burns to their hands and backs. However, the hospital confirmed that four patients had sustained extensive burns.
Probe Into Boiler Blast Underway
The fire department and police have launched a joint investigation to establish the exact cause of the explosion and determine whether industrial safety norms were followed at the mill.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by workers in Surat’s industrial units, where equipment failures can quickly turn into life-threatening emergencies. The findings of the investigation are expected to establish whether a technical fault, excessive pressure or another factor triggered the blast.
