Surat, Gujarat – The streets of Surat are poised to transform into a sea of devotion as the diamond city of Surat gears up for its largest-ever Rath Yatra. Lakhs of devotees are expected to throng the roads for a glimpse of Lord Jagannathji, along with his brother Baldev and sister Subhadra. This year, however, the grand spectacle will be underpinned by a revolutionary security framework: the Surat Police are deploying advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and an extensive network of drone cameras to ensure seamless crowd management and unprecedented safety. This strategic integration of technology marks a significant leap in how major religious gatherings are organized in Gujarat.

“Managing a crowd of lakhs is always a formidable challenge, but this year, we are leveraging cutting-edge technology to create a new benchmark for safety and efficiency,” stated a senior Surat Police official, emphasizing the innovative approach. “Our goal is to ensure a truly divine and secure experience for every devotee.”

For the first time in Surat’s history, a remarkable seven Rath Yatras will crisscross the city, with the procession originating from the ISKCON temple set to be the grandest, stretching over an impressive 12 kilometers. This expanded scale has necessitated an equally robust security apparatus.

The core of Surat Police’s advanced plan lies in its sophisticated AI-powered crowd management system. “With the help of AI, we will instantly identify areas of high crowd density where the situation could potentially worsen,” explained a spokesperson from the Command and Control Room. “This real-time information will be immediately relayed to our field personnel, enabling rapid deployment and immediate crowd management intervention.” Complementing the AI, over 12 drones will provide continuous aerial surveillance across all sensitive areas along the Rath Yatra routes. These eyes in the sky will offer a comprehensive overview, helping prevent any untoward incidents and bolstering the overall security framework.

The human element of security remains formidable, with over 4,000 police personnel and Home Guard jawans, supported by 1 RPF and 3 SRP companies, deployed across the city. The command structure includes 3 Joint Police Commissioners, 8 DCPs, 20 ACPs, 41 PIs, and 150 PSIs. A force of 600 policemen will be equipped with body-worn cameras, providing crucial real-time footage. All seven Rath Yatras will be meticulously monitored from the central control room using 800 CCTV cameras, with 7 additional drone cameras specifically tasked with regulating traffic flow.

A key highlight of this year’s ISKCON Rath Yatra is its magnificent hydraulic chariot. Standing an imposing 30 to 35 feet high and 20 to 22 feet wide, this engineering marvel can adjust its height on demand. “When the chariot needs to pass under trees or other obstacles, it can be easily lowered,” explained an organizer. “Conversely, it can be raised so devotees can have a full darshan of the Lord, making the Rath Yatra both seamless and spiritually enriching.” This innovative feature ensures the procession’s smooth movement through Surat’s diverse urban landscape.

The grand ISKCON Rath Yatra is scheduled for Friday, June 27th, commencing from Surat Railway Station at 3:30 PM. The auspicious journey will conclude at the Hare Krishna Temple in Jahangirpura, following a route that traverses the Textile Market, Udhana Darwaja, Majura Gate, Sardar Bridge, and Adajan Road. The procession will be flagged off with an aarti ceremony led by the Surat Collector and Police Commissioner.

Devotees can anticipate a vibrant spectacle, including 22 grand tableaux, a lively band party, adorned horses, and the revered Swami Pripadar’s buggy. The spirit of devotion will be further enhanced by continuous distribution of Bundi and Halwa prasad along the route, culminating in a grand Prasad Jamanwar at the Jahangirpura ISKCON Temple.
