In a bid to streamline ticketing processes and facilitate seamless transactions, Surat railway station has introduced the option for passengers to pay their ticket charges through Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The initiative aims to alleviate the inconvenience caused by the scarcity of change, commonly referred to as “chhutta paisa,” encountered during ticket purchases.

The implementation of the UPI payment system follows a successful trial period during which a QR code scan trail was conducted at the station. From 10 am to 5 pm, 171 passengers availed themselves of the UPI payment option, signaling a promising start to the digital payment era at Surat railway station. This move aligns with the broader digitalization efforts undertaken by Indian Railways to modernize its services and enhance passenger convenience.

The QR code-based UPI payment system was first piloted at the Churchgate PRS center in Mumbai, where it garnered positive feedback and demonstrated its efficacy in facilitating hassle-free transactions. Building upon this success, the system has now been extended to Surat railway station on a trial basis, marking a significant milestone in the station’s journey towards embracing digital innovations.

Passengers at Surat railway station can now simply scan the QR code displayed at ticket counters using their UPI-enabled mobile payment apps to complete their transactions swiftly and securely. This initiative not only eliminates the need for physical currency but also minimizes the risk associated with handling cash, contributing to a safer and more hygienic environment amidst ongoing health concerns.

“The introduction of UPI payment at Surat railway station reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to leveraging technology to enhance passenger experience and modernize its operations. As digital payment solutions continue to gain traction across various sectors, the railway authorities remain dedicated to exploring innovative avenues to meet the evolving needs and expectations of travelers nationwide” said a senior WR officer.
