Surat Police: Silvassa in UT makes harmful ayurvedic syrup that killed six in Kheda

Surat :  While Gujarat police have swung into action following six casualties in linked to the consumption of intoxicating ayurvedic syrup in Kheda district, the Surat police revealed that the manufacturing hub for this potentially hazardous syrup resides in the union territory (UT) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH) in Silvassa, as well as Abu in Rajasthan. As part of their ongoing investigation, authorities have detained the distributor of this Ayurvedic syrup for detailed questioning.

In response to a directive from the State Government after six reported fatalities linked to the consumption of an intoxicating syrup in Kheda district in Gujarat, Surat Police conducted sweeping raids across Varachha, Amroli, Katargam, and Sarthana areas in Surat.

Prompted by the tragic deaths of six individuals attributed to an intoxicating Ayurvedic syrup in Kheda district, the state police initiated widespread searches. Surat Police joined the efforts, collaborating in a joint operation involving Surat PCB and SOG teams. The raids culminated in the seizure of a staggering 2155 bottles of suspected intoxicating syrup from various medical, pan shops, and grocery stores across different locations in Surat.

The urgency of these searches stems from the recent deaths occurring within a span of just two days, raising concerns over the safety of this particular Ayurvedic syrup.

The seized stocks encompass three distinct types of syrup, prompting authorities to collect samples for further investigation at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Should the laboratory analysis confirm an alcohol content exceeding 12% in accordance with section 168 of the Cosmetic, Food, and Drugs Department regulations, distributors and sellers could face legal repercussions under the Prohibition Act.

Rajdeepsinh Nakum, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) said that after the incident in Kheda, a large quantity of suspected intoxicating syrup has been seized. Manufacturing of this kind of syrup is done at Silvassa in the union territory and Abu.

“A raid was conducted by a team of SOG and PCB at Sri Ram Agency in Surat and a large amount of suspected intoxicating syrup has been seized. According to the rules of section 168 of the Cosmetic and Drugs and Food Department, this syrup can be sold as medicine only if it has an alcoholic content of at least 12℅ percent” said Nakum
