Surat : Surat is a fast-growing city in the Indian state of Gujarat. With a population of about 6 million people, it is Gujarat’s second-largest metropolis after Ahmedabad. The city is a major textile and diamond manufacturing centre, contributing considerably to the state’s economy. As the city grows, there is an urgent need for expanded railway infrastructure to meet rising transportation demand.

Surat is now administered by the Western Railway (WR) division, which is based in Mumbai. However, owing to the absence of a defined division and a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), the city has faced considerable obstacles. The lack of a DRM has made addressing the unique difficulties confronting Surat difficult, resulting in delayed projects and insufficient attention to the city’s railway infrastructure.

A separate division under the WR headquarters in Mumbai has long been requested by numerous parties in Surat. The establishment of a distinct division would not only enhance administration, but will also increase the efficiency of the city’s railway operations. The division will concentrate on Surat’s special demands, allowing for the timely completion of different railway projects such as station enlargement and the introduction of new trains.

A separate division with a DRM will also allow for greater collaboration between the railways and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). With the city’s population rapidly rising, improved integration of railway infrastructure and other means of transportation like as buses and metro rail is critical. This would increase connection and minimise traffic congestion on the highways, adding to the city’s general growth.

To summarise, the establishment of a distinct division with a DRM for Surat is an urgent need that must be addressed by the government. The division will provide the city with the infrastructure and administration it needs to keep up with its expansion and development. Surat may become a model city for integrated transport, benefitting its inhabitants and contributing to the state’s overall economic development, with greater cooperation between the railways and municipal authorities.
