Surat Nasirnagar Demolition Sparks Political Storm, Questions Over “Unknown” Action

Surat | Gujarat — A massive controversy has erupted in Surat’s Katargam area after nearly 100 homes in the Nasirnagar slum were demolished in broad daylight, leaving hundreds of residents homeless and triggering serious questions over who actually authorized the action.

The shocking part of the incident is not just the demolition itself—but the growing confusion over responsibility. Despite the presence of municipal officials and police personnel during the operation, no agency has officially taken ownership of the demolition.

Katargam BJP MLA Vinu Mordia has now admitted that the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) was not responsible for the demolition. “The Central Zone officials have clearly stated that no demolition order was issued. They were only carrying out road line measurement work,” he said, adding, “If the municipality did not do it, then who used JCBs and Hitachi machines to demolish homes in broad daylight?”

The unanswered question—who is the “Mr. India” behind the demolition—has now become the centre of political and public debate.

Former Congress corporator Aslam Cyclewala has escalated the matter, claiming he possesses CCTV footage and videos of the demolition. “I challenge the Municipal Commissioner to summon the officers seen in the videos and take action,” he said. Cyclewala further alleged that senior officials, including police and SMC staff, were present on site during the demolition.

Residents of Nasirnagar have made disturbing claims, alleging that police personnel stood by as homes were being razed. “Women and children were crying, but the police did nothing. No one showed us any legal order,” said one affected resident.

These allegations have raised serious concerns over law enforcement conduct. Questions are now being asked whether police verified any demolition order or allowed unauthorized action to proceed unchecked.

With growing political pressure, scrutiny has also shifted to the Surat Municipal Corporation. Officials are now being questioned on why no intervention was made if illegal demolition was underway in front of their eyes.

Cyclewala went further, accusing elements within the system, saying, “SOG officer Rajdeep Singh Nakum acted like General Dyer. I have all CCTV proof. If the Commissioner has power, he should investigate honestly.”
