SuratA major accident was averted after a serious technical fault was discovered during the ongoing construction of the Surat metro rail bridge on the Saroli to Kadodara road on Tuesday. The incident occurred when workers were attempting to mount the overhead structure on the pillar. The span of the Saroli-Kadodara Surat metro line tilted to one side, exposing rods and causing a commotion at the construction site.

Eyewitnesses reported the immediate chaos as workers ran for safety. The road between Saroli and Kadodara was promptly shut down for safety reasons, resulting in a significant traffic jam extending over three kilometers. Commuters expressed their frustration and fear over the incident.

“I was on my way to work when the traffic came to a complete halt,” said Rajesh Patel, a daily commuter. “At first, I had no idea what was going on, but then I saw the span of the metro bridge tilted. It was terrifying to think what could have happened if it had collapsed.”

Another commuter, Meena Desai, shared her concerns about the project’s safety. “We have been eagerly waiting for the metro, hoping it will ease our daily commute. But seeing such a serious fault even before the project is completed is worrying. It raises many questions about the quality of construction and the safety measures in place.”

The Surat metro rail project, slated to open in 2027, is intended to be a significant advancement for the city’s infrastructure. However, this incident has cast a shadow over its development. The mishap, which occurred during the installation of the overhead structure on the pillar, caused the entire slab of the span to sustain damage and tilt to one side.

Government officials quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and investigate the cause of the fault. The performance of the construction company responsible for the project is now under scrutiny, with many raising concerns about their competence and the safety standards being followed.

“There is an atmosphere of fear among the people after seeing such poor performance,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We are trusting these projects with our safety and our lives. This incident has shaken that trust.”
