This decline in prices has cast a dark shadow over Surat, with concerns arising about the future of the industry and the livelihoods of its workforce.

According to a report published in idexonline.com, polished diamond prices saw another decline in May. The prospect of a global recession continues to loom large, causing a ripple effect across the diamond market. Amidst inflation concerns in the United States and other countries, consumer demand has slowed down, leading to midstream inventories piling up. This sluggish demand has further worsened the overall outlook for the diamond industry. De Beers’ sales were down 20 per cent in May. It cancelled auctions because of poor demand and Petra held back parcels of over 75,000 carats at its May tender for the same reason.
China’s Post-Lockdown Bounce Fails to Materialize:
One of the key expectations to revive the diamond market was China’s post-lockdown bounce. However, contrary to predictions, the anticipated surge in demand from China did not materialize. This setback has dampened hopes for a quick recovery in the industry. With China being one of the largest consumers of diamonds, its lackluster performance has contributed significantly to the declining prices.
Uncertainty Surrounding G7 Sanctions and Global Trade:

With over 500,000 diamond cutters and polishers employed in the city, the dwindling prices pose a significant threat to their livelihoods. As prices continue to fall, diamantaires may be compelled to shut down factories, leading to widespread job losses and economic distress within the community.
Bhavesh Tank, vice-president of Diamond Workers’ Union Gujarat (DWUG) told The Blunt Times, “We fear job losses as well as loss of lives in the diamond industry”. “The past year has been one of the worst years for the diamond cutters. Many workers have lost jobs and about 20 workers have committed suicide due to unemployment”

“The decreasing diamond prices have undeniably cast a dark shadow over Surat” said a leading diamond company owner. “The industry’s vulnerability to global economic fluctuations, combined with factors such as slow consumer demand, China’s underperformance, and the possibility of G7 sanctions, have contributed to this challenging situation.”
He added, “The repercussions are felt most keenly by the thousands of diamond workers in Surat, who face the risk of unemployment. However, by embracing innovation, collaboration, and proactive measures, Surat’s diamond industry can strive to overcome this crisis and emerge stronger in the long run.”
