Surat, Gujarat – Apparently, some people in Surat believe diamonds are a gem idea to be roasted before they shine brighter. But when you put them in an oven like samosas, things can really heat up — literally. A fire broke out late Tuesday night in a diamond unit located in Kevin Building, Ved Road, after diamonds were being “heated” in an oven, causing panic and prompting a swift rescue by the fire department.

Thankfully, no one was injured — unless you count the oven’s hurt feelings.

Blazing Ovens and Boiling Nerves

The factory, Radha Krishna Gems, is nestled on the second floor of Kevin Building. According to sources, diamonds were kept in the oven for a heating process — because nothing says luxury like preheated gems. But shortly after the diamonds entered their spa session, the oven threw a tantrum and caught fire, setting off a chain of chaos.

Fire Officer Akshay Patel recalled the scene with precision, “As soon as we got the call, teams from Mughlisara, Katargam, and Dabholi fire stations rushed to the scene. We rescued 5 people from the third floor using a ladder. Another 10 to 12 were safely evacuated from the fifth floor, with the help of the neighboring Keshav Drashti Building’s terrace.”

High-Rise Fire, High-Speed Rescue

As the smoke filled the building, residents and factory workers were guided to the rooftop. The fire team quickly turned into real-life superheroes — minus the capes, but definitely with ladders.

“It was a textbook operation. No injuries, no major damage. Just the oven — and maybe someone’s pride,” Officer Patel added with a half-smile.

Surat’s Sparkling Fire Drill

The diamond city has seen its fair share of fire-related scares over the years, but this one stands out — not because of the fire, but because of what caused it.

“Who puts diamonds in an oven?” quipped Vijaybhai Shah, a shop owner from the area who gathered outside during the commotion. “We bake bread, not billion-rupee stones.”

Diamonds Are Forever, But Ovens… Not So Much

The fire was confined to the oven itself, and no major property damage was reported. However, the incident has reignited discussions about safety protocols in small-scale diamond units, many of which operate in cramped residential-commercial buildings without sufficient fire safety infrastructure.

It’s a miracle — or perhaps credit to the efficiency of the fire team — that everyone walked away unscathed. For now, the city can breathe easy, but maybe the next time, Surat’s diamantaires might think twice before playing MasterChef with precious stones.

As one firefighter jokingly muttered while packing up hoses,

“If you want to cook something, stick to rotis. Leave the diamonds alone.”
