Surat : Surat, Gujarat’s diamond capital, can now boast another accomplishment: the state’s first tenement redevelopment project.

Despite several challenges, the Dumbhal Tenement Redevelopment (DTR) project was completed in under five years. There are 896 apartments and 12 retail spaces available at this Dumbhal location.

On August 8, 2017, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) contracted Siddhi Construction (Sagar Dandvate and Prashant Dandvate) to carry out the DTR project. The initial completion date for the Rs 43 crore project was set for three years, however it was later extended by a further two years. Nonetheless, Siddhi Construction made certain that the task was finished well ahead of the new date.

Before the DRT project had even begun, on February 10, 2017, the municipal corporation had issued a work order for the Rs 134-crore Althan tenement redevelopment. In spite of this, the Althan project is only 70% complete.

The Surat municipal corporation has reportedly taken on four tenement renovation projects. The DTR project was the first to be finished on time, whereas the redevelopment of the Althan tenement building is going at a snail’s pace. Anjana and Gotalawadi are the sites of the other two rehabilitation initiatives. There is a total of Rs 400 crore being invested in these four projects.
