SURAT : A controversial car rally during Uttar Pradesh MLA Chandrabhan Paswan’s visit to Surat has sparked serious concerns over law and order in the city after a convoy of luxury vehicles allegedly violated multiple traffic rules in full public view.
The incident took place when a group of enthusiastic supporters gathered at Surat airport to welcome the visiting MLA. Instead of a regulated reception, supporters reportedly organised an unauthorised high-speed car rally involving 10 to 15 luxury vehicles fitted with black-tinted glass, which is prohibited under traffic regulations.
The convoy, which began from the Udhna–Magdalla Road and proceeded towards the airport, was seen moving at high speed while creating noise and disruption for other commuters. Videos circulating on social media show supporters leaning out of windows, playing loud Bhojpuri music, and performing stunts-like behaviour on busy roads.
Eyewitnesses said the convoy created panic among regular motorists.
“It felt like a race on public roads. We had to slow down suddenly as these cars were moving recklessly,” said a commuter who witnessed the rally.
Reports indicate that the convoy, led by MLA supporter Jitesh Singh and others, later escorted the MLA to the Circuit House via Vesu after the airport reception. Despite the route being a high-security and VIP movement corridor, no prior permission was reportedly taken for such a large-scale rally.
The incident has raised questions about coordination between event organisers and local authorities, especially since such movements require strict clearance due to traffic and security protocols.
After videos went viral on social media platforms, tagging Surat Police and senior officials, the Dumas Police swung into action. Officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated based on CCTV footage and vehicle identification numbers.
“A detailed inquiry is underway. We are verifying number plates and examining video evidence to identify violations and take appropriate legal action,” a police official said.
The incident has reignited debate over unchecked political celebrations and road safety violations in urban centres, with citizens demanding stricter enforcement of traffic rules regardless of political influence.
Authorities are expected to take further action once the investigation is completed.
