SURAT : The BJP’s much-publicised model of governance in Surat has come under intense scrutiny after Rajya Sabha MP and diamond tycoon Govind Dholakia publicly exposed the city’s crumbling road infrastructure. His viral video from the Ichhapore-to-Surat Airport stretch has not only embarrassed the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) but has also raised uncomfortable questions about the accountability of the BJP’s own administration.

As per the report published in a local website, travelling to Surat Airport on July 19, Dholakia recorded the muddy, pothole-ridden road from his moving vehicle and remarked, “Surat is in a shameful condition. No one’s stomach water is moving,” expressing frustration over the civic apathy.

The video quickly spread across social media, triggering criticism from citizens and the opposition. Many questioned why a ruling party MP had to resort to recording videos to highlight problems that thousands of commuters face every day.

Dholakia’s personal assistant, Bhavesh, later clarified that the video was originally shared privately with Mayor Maya Mavani, Standing Committee Chairman Rajan Patel, Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan and city BJP president Paresh Patel.

“Govind Kaka had sent the video only to improve the situation and alert the administration. We do not know how it reached social media,” he said.

The controversy has become particularly significant because the damaged road connects Surat Airport and the Surat Diamond Bourse, one of the world’s largest diamond trading hubs. Industrialists have repeatedly complained that poor infrastructure damages Surat’s global reputation and inconveniences investors and business visitors.

Political observers say the episode has exposed deep cracks within the ruling establishment. While the SMC continues to promote Surat as a smart city, Dholakia’s remarks have highlighted the widening gap between official claims and ground reality.

With the BJP’s own MP openly questioning civic performance, the focus has now shifted from damaged roads to damaged credibility. Citizens are demanding action, not explanations, from those entrusted with governing India’s fastest-growing city.
