Surat: The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Surat, led by newly appointed chairman and BJP MLA from Choriyasi assembly seat, Sandip Desai, has come under scrutiny for allegedly disregarding the law of the land. Accusations have been raised that the APMC is constructing facilities at the Sardar Market without obtaining the necessary construction permissions from the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) Town planning department.

The Sardar Market, which falls under the jurisdiction of the SMC, has been operating under the APMC’s management. Despite this, the APMC reportedly initiated construction activities at the market without seeking proper authorization from the town planning department.

Former Congress councilor, Aslam Cyclewala, has brought this matter to the attention of top SMC authorities, highlighting the potential dangers of unauthorized construction at the site. In his communication, Cyclewala posed serious questions to the authorities regarding the accountability of both the APMC and the SMC if any unfortunate accidents occur during the ongoing construction.

The alleged lack of adherence to legal procedures by the APMC has raised concerns among citizens and the local community. As an elected representative and chairman of APMC, Sandip Desai’s leadership has come under scrutiny for what appears to be an open license to violate laws without repercussions.

Construction activities at the Sardar Market are said to be in full swing, despite the absence of the requisite permissions. Such actions have raised eyebrows and questions about the APMC’s conduct and whether they are above the law.

When approached for a statement, Sandip Desai’s office did not respond immediately. However, Aslam Cyclewala expressed deep concern over the potential consequences of the unauthorized construction, stating, “Public safety should always be the top priority, and no entity, not even the APMC, should be allowed to proceed without adhering to the law.”

Meanwhile, the SMC has assured a thorough investigation into the matter. A senior official from the Town planning department stated, “We have received information about the alleged illegal construction at Sardar Market. Our team will conduct a comprehensive inquiry and take appropriate action based on the findings.”

The incident has sparked debates within the political circles of Surat, with opposition parties demanding accountability and urging the APMC and its chairman to be held responsible for any violations committed during the construction.
