Surat | Gujarat — There is some good news for the high flying Surtis. The long-awaited demand for the 24×7 operations of the Surat international airport has been approved with the NOTAM, or Notice to Airmen (also known as Notice to Air Missions) issued on Thursday.

Official sources at the Surat airport have confirmed the NOTAM on the 24X7 operations of the Surat airport starting from August 9 at 5:35 pm onward. The NOTAM is permanent and that surat is now open for air traffic services 24  hours a day.

What it means in simple words:

Previously, Surat Airport might have had limited operating hours. From August 9 onwards, it is officially operating 24×7. The national aeronautical publication (eAIP India) will be updated to reflect this change.

The We Want Working Airport Group (WWWAS), Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), airport activists and frequent fliers had time and again raised the demand for 24×7 operations at Surat International Airport, emphasizing the need for enhanced staffing, security, and technical support.

“Surat contributes significantly to Gujarat’s economy through diamonds, textiles, and agri-exports. Our entrepreneurs are ready. All we needed was an airport that works round the clock with international cargo access,” said Nikhil Madrasi, president of SGCCI.

He pointed out that despite Surat’s global trade links, the lack of international cargo flights and limited airport operational hours have kept the region from realizing its full potential.

Surat, a city that clocked over 16 lakh passengers in 2024-25 and consistently demonstrates its potential.Surat’s journey has been one of self-reliance. Historically, it even had to provide a ₹3 crore bank guarantee to Air India to initiate domestic flights. The city’s enterprising spirit met the challenge, and Surat Airport has grown steadily since, often without the institutional backing seen elsewhere.

In May, the  Surat Airport was made a 24×7 operational airport, albeit for a trial period of 90 days, which was a long-awaited victory for airlines. However, the cheer was tempered by reality. Airlines argue that while the 24×7 status existed on paper, practical limitations like staff shortages and infrastructure gaps meant the airport was only partially operational. This effectively discouraged late-night and early-morning flights, crucial for optimal aircraft rotation and enhanced connectivity.

“Surat’s strategic location makes it an ideal candidate for a critical aviation node. Its 18 aircraft parking bays could alleviate congestion at overloaded hubs like Mumbai, offering a viable option for night parking. During “Operation Sindoor,” Surat Airport admirably handled multiple emergency landings and diverted flights, showcasing its readiness and reliability in crisis situations” said Rajesh Modi, airport activist.
