Spotify is preparing to introduce one of its most requested features to mobile devices: playlist folder management. After being available on desktop since 2010, users may soon be able to fully create and manage playlist folders directly from their phones.

Bringing a long-missing feature to mobile

Playlist folders allow users to organize playlists into categories such as workouts, travel, or moods instead of keeping everything in one long list. Until now, this feature was limited to desktop. Mobile users could only view folders but not create or edit them.

That limitation is finally changing. Spotify is now testing full folder management on mobile, allowing users to organize their music library more efficiently.

What users can expect

With this update, users will be able to:

  • Create new playlist folders
  • Rename existing folders
  • Move playlists in and out of folders
  • Remove playlists from folders

All of this can be done directly within the mobile app, removing the need to switch to desktop.

Where to find the feature

The folder management option is expected to appear under the Create button or within the Your Library section. It is already rolling out gradually to both Android and iOS users.

Spotify is also adding flexibility in how folders are viewed, allowing users to switch between Grid and List view for better organization.

Gradual rollout and impact

The feature is being released in stages, so not all users will see it immediately. However, early reports suggest that it works smoothly and fills a major gap between Spotify’s desktop and mobile experience.

While Spotify has been focusing heavily on AI-driven features like recommendations and automated playlists, this update focuses on improving a basic but essential part of the user experience.

For regular users, this long-awaited feature could significantly improve how music libraries are organized and managed on mobile devices.
