A human-versus-robot cage fight in San Francisco has generated unexpected interest in putting people directly against humanoid machines.

The event, organised by robotics company REK, featured TikTok creator Frankie LaPenna taking on three different robots, including a six-foot humanoid machine in a fight promoted as “Human VS Terminator”.

REK founder Cix Liv said the company had initially expected robot-versus-robot fights to be the main attraction. However, LaPenna’s appearance quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the event.

A human takes on machines in the cage

LaPenna’s appearance was designed largely around entertainment and spectacle. He faced robots capable of performing movements such as punches and kicks, creating an unusual matchup between a human participant and machines designed for physical combat demonstrations.

The six-foot humanoid robot was presented as a Terminator-style opponent, adding a theatrical element to the event. LaPenna later described the experience as frightening, particularly because of the robot’s size and the way the fight was presented.

Despite their appearance, REK’s robots are not fully autonomous combatants. Human operators control the machines in real time, while the robots handle lower-level functions needed for movement and balance.

As a result, the fights are closer to remotely operated combat performances than battles between autonomous artificial intelligence systems. Operators issue commands while the robots execute the movements inside the cage.

The concept has similarities to the 2011 science-fiction film Real Steel, which depicts remotely controlled humanoid robots competing in boxing matches. Liv has previously cited the film as an inspiration for REK’s approach.

Robot fights were expected to be the main attraction

REK initially planned for robot-versus-robot matches to be the central feature of its events. The idea was to showcase humanoid machines competing against each other while demonstrating their ability to move and perform physical tasks.

The San Francisco event produced a different result. Once LaPenna entered the cage, the human-versus-machine confrontation became one of the event’s most notable attractions.

The response has given REK an indication that audiences may also be interested in watching humans compete directly against robots. The novelty of placing a person opposite a humanoid machine creates a straightforward form of entertainment that can appeal beyond the robotics industry.

The event also highlighted the difference between current humanoid robots and fictional machines often shown in films. REK’s robots still depend on human operators and cannot independently make combat decisions.

Even so, combining robotics, live performance and physical competition can create a format that attracts considerable public attention. The reaction to the San Francisco event suggests there may be an audience for similar human-versus-robot encounters.

REK has yet to announce another human-versus-robot event

REK has not announced another human-versus-robot fight, and there are currently no confirmed dates or venues for a follow-up event.

The company entered the San Francisco event expecting robot-versus-robot battles to be the main attraction. However, the attention generated by LaPenna’s participation has provided REK with another possible direction for future events.

If the company decides to develop the concept further, human-versus-robot contests could receive a more prominent role alongside robot-versus-robot matches.

For now, the format remains primarily an entertainment spectacle rather than a formal sporting competition or a demonstration of fully autonomous robotics. The machines are operated by humans, and the events focus on performance and audience engagement.

The San Francisco fight has nevertheless demonstrated that human-versus-machine matchups can attract attention. Whether REK turns that interest into a regular event format remains to be seen.
