Surat : During his recent three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a remarkable gift to the first lady, Dr. Jill Biden – a lab-grown 7.5 carat green diamond crafted by the world-renowned Green Lab, based in Surat’s Ichhapore gems and jewellery park. This extraordinary gesture not only showcased India’s expertise in lab-grown diamond manufacturing but also solidified Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to the ‘Make In India’ initiative.

Mukesh Patel, the chairman of Green Lab, expressed his pride in the fact that the Prime Minister of India had chosen a lab-grown diamond produced in their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which operates using green energy. The diamond, grown in their cutting-edge laboratory in Ichhapore gems and jewellery park, was meticulously cut and polished into a round shape specifically for the purpose of gifting it to Dr. Jill Biden.

This unprecedented act of presenting a lab-grown diamond underscores Prime Minister Modi’s recognition of India’s achievement in becoming a global leader in lab-grown diamond cultivation and manufacturing, aligning with his vision for a self-reliant India. By endorsing these lab-grown diamonds, Modi effectively became an ambassador for the ‘Make In India’ campaign, promoting the country’s success in the industry.

The United States serves as the largest consumer market for lab-grown diamond jewelry worldwide, further highlighting the significance of this gift. Dinesh Navadia, the chairman of the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI), noted that Prime Minister Modi’s gesture positions him as the brand ambassador for Surat’s lab-grown diamond industry. The 7.5 carat lab-grown diamond, produced by Surat-based Green Lab using sustainable energy sources, symbolizes the innovation and expertise driving the industry’s growth.

Lab-grown diamonds have emerged as a compelling alternative to natural diamonds, with their demand steadily increasing across the globe. The shortage of rough diamonds from Russia due to U.S. sanctions has presented challenges for Surat, the diamond hub of India. However, the lab-grown diamond industry has become a viable alternative, providing employment opportunities for diamond workers in the region.

The lab-grown green diamond gifted to Dr. Jill Biden exhibits the same chemical and optical properties as earth-mined diamonds, while also being environmentally friendly. The manufacturing process employed eco-diversified resources such as solar and wind power, further highlighting the commitment to sustainability and green practices.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gift not only symbolizes the technological prowess and innovation of India’s lab-grown diamond industry but also strengthens the bond between India and the United States. It showcases Surat’s cutting-edge capabilities and reinforces the city’s reputation as a global center for diamond manufacturing” said Dinesh Navadia, chairman, Indian Diamond Institute (IDI).

As Surat continues to drive the lab-grown diamond industry forward, it is poised to make significant contributions to the global diamond market. The city’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, innovation, and skill development positions it as a key player in meeting the growing demand for lab-grown diamonds worldwide.

With Prime Minister Modi’s endorsement and India’s advancements in lab-grown diamond manufacturing, the country is well on its way to becoming a trailblazer in the industry, setting new standards for excellence and environmental responsibility.
