DamanStudents of Textile and Fashion Management at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Daman Campus had the unique opportunity to delve into the traditional art of enamelling, an intricate technique that traces its origins back to Safavid Iran. This enriching hands-on experience was part of a workshop organized during the 3rd Orientation program for freshers.

Renowned artisan  Mukesh Meenakar, a national award winner in handicrafts, led the workshop, bringing his vast expertise and passion for this ancient art form to the eager students. Enamelling, a traditional Persian art form, involves the meticulous painting and colouring of surfaces such as rings, bangles, and other fashion accessories. The workshop provided students not only with practical skills in this delicate process but also an appreciation for the cultural and historical significance of the craft.

Throughout the workshop,. Meenakar demonstrated various enamelling techniques, allowing students to observe and then practise under his guidance. The students learned about the materials and tools used, the different stages of the enamelling process, and the intricate patterns and designs that characterise this art form. The hands-on experience enabled students to understand the level of precision and patience required to master enamelling.

Assistant Professor  Anshu Choudhary emphasised the importance of such workshops in preserving traditional crafts. “Incorporating traditional techniques like enamelling into modern fashion education not only enriches the students’ skill set but also ensures that these ancient art forms are not lost to time. It’s crucial for future designers to respect and incorporate elements of traditional craftsmanship in their work,” she stated.

Shubham Verma added, “Workshops like these bridge the gap between traditional arts and contemporary design practices. They inspire students to innovate while staying connected to cultural roots. The knowledge gained here can be a unique selling point for their future creations.”

The students were deeply inspired by Meenakar’s passion and dedication to the art of enamelling. Many expressed a newfound appreciation for traditional crafts and a desire to incorporate these techniques into their future designs. “Learning from a master like  Meenakar has been an eye-opening experience. It’s amazing to see how much history and culture can be embedded in a single piece of jewellery or accessory,” shared one of the students.

This workshop not only introduced students to the art of enamelling but also highlighted the broader importance of preserving traditional crafts in the modern era. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the integration of traditional techniques and contemporary design can lead to innovative and culturally rich creations.
