Ahmedabad, Gujarat – In a significant stride towards empowering women and ensuring their voices are heard, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday brought its “at your doorstep” initiative to Ahmedabad. A public hearing at the State Guest House in Shahibaug saw the Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, personally addressing 40 complaints, providing a crucial platform for women seeking redressal.
The event, aptly themed ‘Rashtriya Mahila Ayog Tamara Dwar’ (National Commission for Women at your Doorstep), underscores the NCW’s commitment to proactive engagement. “The National Commission for Women had decided to go to the complainant women from the front,” stated Ms. Rahatkar, highlighting the shift from a reactive to a more accessible approach. “After this decision, the Commission started the public hearing program according to the division in each region.”
The atmosphere at the State Guest House was one of hope and empowerment, as women from diverse backgrounds presented their grievances. Separate arrangements were meticulously made to ensure that each complainant could personally present their case to the Chairperson. Ms. Rahatkar listened attentively to every individual, offering thoughtful suggestions and pathways for resolution.
The impact was immediate and tangible. Out of the 40 complaints registered, a remarkable six were disposed of suo moto – meaning the Commission took direct action without further prompting. For the remaining complaints, Ms. Rahatkar provided expert guidance, ranging from resolving intricate family disputes to advising on filing charge sheets and even directing some cases to the State Women’s Commission for further action.
“This public hearing of Ahmedabad district will prove to be very useful for everyone,” Ms. Rahatkar confidently asserted, reflecting on the collaborative effort. The event witnessed the full participation of the National Commission for Women, including two dedicated investigation officers. Crucially, the entire administration of Ahmedabad district was also present, demonstrating a unified front in addressing women’s issues.
High-ranking officials from the Ahmedabad District Administration were in attendance, underscoring the gravity and importance of the initiative. Among those present were Ahmedabad District Collector Sujit Kumar, Ahmedabad District Development Officer Videh Khare, ADGP Ajay Chaudhary, ASP Vagisha Joshi, and DCP Zone 1 Neeraj Badgujar, alongside other officers and employees. Their presence not only lent credibility to the process but also ensured immediate administrative support for the suggested resolutions.
