Surat (Gujarat) : Nature Club Surat (NCS), an NGO that has been working for Environment Education, Adventure Activities, and Rescue Work since 1985, celebrated World Wetland Day by organising a Wetland Photography Competition to raise awareness about environmental conservation among citizens.
The Nirmala wetland conservation project at Gavier lake, which is located in Gavier and surrounded by concrete jungle, hosted the Wetland photography competition from February 2 to February 4. Every year, NCS celebrates World Wetland Day to raise awareness among its residents.
The photography competition included categories such as birds, butterflies, and wetland biodiversity. Surat Mayor Hemaliben Boghawala presented the prizes to the winners on Sunday, in the presence of Assistant Commissioner of Police Jahid Khan Pathan. Saurabhbhai Desai judged the entire competition.
“It is commendable that NCS is putting in hard work for the conservation of the Gavier lake,” said Surat Mayor Hemaliben Boghawala. “It is our responsibility as citizens and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) leaders to support the NCS initiative.”
“Nirmala Wetland is beautifully conserved and provides tranquillity to urban lives; it must be protected,” Boghawala added.
Saurabh Desai discussed the importance of wetlands and urged people not to feed birds or animals without first learning about their natural feeding habits and the impact on the environment. “Our education system should be designed in such a way that it raises awareness about our native birds and animals,” Desai said.
“Surat city should have more of these types of lakes and should focus on native tree plantations to attract birds and butterflies of various species,” said Snehal Patel of NCS.
