Surat : In a heartwarming and historic moment, a 15-year-old girl from Mumbai has been discharged from Global Hospital after becoming the world’s youngest recipient of a shoulder-level arm transplant. The successful surgery has given her not just a new limb, but a renewed sense of independence and hope for the future.

The transplant was made possible by the selfless act of the family of Late Riya Bobby Mistry, a 9-year-old girl who became the world’s youngest hand donor. After Riya was declared brain dead at Kiran Hospital in Surat, her family made the brave and compassionate decision to donate her organs, including her hands, lungs, liver, kidneys, and corneas. Their act of kindness has saved or improved the lives of seven people.

When the recipient met the Donate Life team, she expressed her deep gratitude: “Late Riya’s family is also my family. I will tie Rakhi on Late Riya’s brother next year with Late Riya’s right hand.” Her emotional words reflect the bond that has formed between the two families, united by this life-changing gift.

The 15-year-old girl’s journey began in October 2022 when a tragic accident occurred at her cousin’s house in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. While playing on the terrace, she accidentally touched a live 11,000 KW electrical wire, resulting in severe burns to both hands. The extent of the injuries led to the amputation of her right arm at the shoulder level due to gangrene.

Dr. Nilesh Satbhai and his dedicated team at Global Hospital Mumbai performed the groundbreaking surgery, which has given the girl a second chance at a normal life. The transplant marked a significant achievement in medical history and a miraculous moment of healing for the recipient.

The parents of the recipient expressed their heartfelt thanks to Riya’s family and the Donate Life organization, saying, “Their selfless hand donation has given our daughter a second life. We are eternally grateful for their kindness.”

Donate Life’s Founder, Nilesh Mandlewala, also shared his thoughts, emphasizing the significance of this act: “Late Riya’s family’s generosity has inspired a movement, highlighting the importance of organ donation. We will continue to promote this noble cause and honor heroes like Late Riya and her family.”

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of organ donation:

One organ donor can save up to eight lives.

One tissue donor can enhance the lives of 50 people.

One corneal donor can restore vision to two individuals.

Through this historic transplant, the late Riya Bobby Mistry has become a symbol of hope, and her family’s decision continues to inspire others to consider the gift of life.
