Surat : A distressing incident unfolded at Surat Civil Hospital’s Medical College hostel as a second-year physiotherapy student attempted suicide, sparking concerns over mental health support for medical students. The student was discovered in a critical condition by fellow students, hinting at a possible motive linked to a love affair.

The tranquility of Surat Civil Hospital’s Medical College hostel was shattered when a distress call alerted fellow students to a harrowing sight. On Tuesday morning, friends of a second-year physiotherapy student, residing in the hostel, were alarmed when their attempts to contact him were met with alarming messages indicating extreme stress.

Upon reaching the student’s room, their worst fears were realized as they found the door locked and unanswered knocks. Responding swiftly, they broke into the room to discover their friend lying unconscious on the floor, foaming at the mouth, with a cord nearby—a grim testament to a desperate attempt at self-harm.

Acting promptly, the friends transported the student to the trauma center at Surat Civil Hospital, where immediate medical attention was provided. Fortunately, the student’s condition stabilized, and he was subsequently admitted to the hospital ward for further observation and treatment.

Sources suggest that the student had initially attempted suicide by hanging himself with a rope and ingesting medications, underscoring the depth of his despair. The revelation that stress, possibly exacerbated by romantic troubles, may have contributed to the student’s drastic actions has left the medical community reeling.

This incident sheds light on the pressing need for robust mental health support systems within educational institutions, particularly those catering to medical students who often grapple with high levels of academic pressure and personal challenges. It underscores the importance of fostering an environment where students feel empowered to seek help and support without fear of stigma or judgment.

As the student recovers under medical care, authorities are urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted suicide, while also prioritizing initiatives aimed at promoting mental well-being and resilience among students.
