Ahmedabad/Surat – In a powerful and decisive move to combat illegal infiltration, Gujarat Police launched their largest-ever statewide campaign against Bangladeshis residing unlawfully in the state. In a single night, Ahmedabad Police apprehended a staggering 890 illegal Bangladeshis, while Surat Police arrested 134 more, sending a clear and stern message about Gujarat’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigrants.
This unprecedented operation, conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the direct guidance of Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, marks a critical step toward tightening internal security and dismantling criminal networks linked to infiltration.
Holding a high-level video conference from the Surat Police Commissioner’s office, Minister Harsh Sanghvi issued strict directives to district police chiefs, range heads, and officers of Law and Order and Intelligence Bureau. He emphasized the need for intensified investigations and uncompromising action against not just infiltrators but also those who shelter or assist them.
At a press briefing from Ahmedabad, State Police Chief Vikas Sahay provided further insights into the operation, highlighting that a number of the arrested individuals were involved in suspicious and criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and possible links to extremist organizations. Those with questionable backgrounds will be interrogated thoroughly at the Joint Interrogation Center.
Minister Harsh Sanghvi Issues a Two-Day Warning
Taking a no-nonsense stance, Harsh Sanghvi delivered a stark warning:
“Illegal Bangladeshis have two days to surrender voluntarily at the nearest police station. Failure to comply will result in the strictest possible legal action.”
He also made it clear that those who provide shelter, employment, or assistance to these illegal residents would face severe legal consequences.
Criminal Networks Under Scrutiny
According to State Police Chief Vikas Sahay, investigations have revealed that many of the Bangladeshis nabbed had obtained fake documents from West Bengal to reside and work across different Indian states, including Gujarat. Two of the individuals apprehended are suspected of being sleeper cell operatives linked to Al-Qaeda, and their activities are currently under intense investigation.
The Gujarat Police, with support from central intelligence agencies, is focusing on dismantling the criminal networks that facilitate illegal immigration and document forgery. The arrested Bangladeshis will be deported back to Bangladesh following the completion of all necessary legal formalities.
Gujarat Sets a National Example
This major crackdown signals Gujarat’s firm resolve to protect its citizens and uphold law and order. It also sets a strong example for other states facing similar challenges with infiltration and associated criminal threats.
