SURAT: Surat’s textile identity is taking a step beyond manufacturing and trading, with an overseas buyer from New Zealand turning to the city for independent scientific quality verification before sourcing products from India.
Kamari Home Limited of Christchurch, New Zealand, has approached the Surat-based Man-Made Textile Research Association (MANTRA) to conduct third-party testing of cotton bedsheets proposed to be procured from Ahmedabad-based Royal Mills for the New Zealand market.
The New Zealand company has sought testing of 100% combed cotton percale and sateen fabrics before placing a bulk order. MANTRA has been asked to verify parameters including fibre composition, actual thread count, warp and weft density, yarn count, single or double-ply construction, shrinkage, appearance after washing, pilling resistance and colourfastness.
Significantly, the overseas buyer wants samples to be sent directly by the Indian manufacturer to MANTRA, with the final test report issued in the name of Kamari Home Limited.
The development highlights the growing importance of independent testing in international textile procurement and could strengthen MANTRA’s position as a quality verification centre for Indian textile exports.
The products fall under Hometech, a major application segment of technical textiles covering home and household textile products. Global buyers are increasingly seeking independently verified performance, durability and conformity with declared specifications before committing to large purchases.
“Surat is not merely manufacturing textiles for the world—it is now also enabling the world to place scientific trust in Indian-made textiles,” MANTRA said.
The development also adds a new dimension to Surat’s textile ecosystem, which is increasingly gaining recognition not only for production but also for testing, research, technical evaluation and quality assurance.
The initiative involving the New Zealand buyer could help position MANTRA as an international testing destination for Hometech and other technical textile products manufactured in India.
“Tested in India – Trusted Globally.”
