Kochi : The Heart Care Foundation will host the Transplant Games in Kochi on December 9th, bringing together organ donors and recipients, to show that a successful life after transplant is achievable and to promote organ donation. Lulu Mall, Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, and the Regional Sports Centre will host the events. The transplant games will mostly take place in the Regional Sports Centre. In collaboration with Kochi Corporation, GCDA, Lulu Group, Liver Foundation of Kerala (LIFOK), the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, and the Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), the Heart Care Foundation is hosting the games.

According to the Heart Care Foundation, the games are open to anybody who has had an organ transplant, is a living donor, or is a family of a deceased donor. In addition to boosting the confidence and morale of organ recipients, the games also seek to recognise organ donors and their families. The chairman of the Heart Care Foundation, Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram, said, “With the games, we aim to create sports and games as a testimonial for the possibilities of life after transplant and convince society that after a certain period, organ recipients can lead a normal life like others.” So, there you have it.

A variety of indoor and outdoor sports will be shown during the games, including as badminton, swimming, table tennis, bowling, swimming, chess, and carrom. The age range for participants in the games is seventy years and above for both recipients and donors. The organisers have said that each individual is limited to no more than three tournaments. Recipients are required to wait at least one year after transplant surgery before being eligible to compete. A medical certificate obtained by the surgical team should be produced.

Children and young people who had participated in the transplant games were treated to a unique ride in Kochi Metro on Children’s Day as part of the festivities surrounding the games. Also planned at the same time as the games was a friendly football match.
