Junagadh’s First Green Corridors Save Six Lives
The donor, 43-year-old Shilaben Jhanjaria, a resident of Jhanjhara Road in Junagadh, suffered a paralysis attack in the back of her brain on Sunday morning. Despite being rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator, medical tests, including an MRI and CT scan, revealed her condition to be irreversible. Shilaben was declared brain dead by doctors at Rebirth Hospital, led by Dr. Akash Patoliya and his team of surgeons.

The extraordinary effort follows the selfless decision of a family to donate the organs of a brain-dead woman, underscoring the growing awareness of organ donation in Gujarat.
Recognizing the opportunity to save lives, Shilaben’s family made the noble decision to donate her organs. The donated organs include her lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, and eyes, which will now provide a new lease on life to six patients in need.
Organs and Their Destinations
Arrangements have been made to transport the organs efficiently and safely. The lungs will be sent to CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad, and the heart will be taken to UN Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad. Both organs require rapid transplantation and will be flown from Keshod Airport in Junagadh to Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, the kidneys and liver will be transported by road to IKD Hospital in Ahmedabad, while Shilaben’s eyes will benefit local recipients. This marks the first-ever heart donation from Junagadh, adding a historic milestone to this life-saving effort.
A Family Familiar with Organ Donation
Shilaben’s family’s decision was deeply rooted in their understanding of the importance of organ donation. Her mother had previously donated a kidney to a family member, making them well aware of the life-saving impact of such acts. This familiarity with organ donation motivated the family to make the decision without hesitation.
Police Support for Green Corridors
To ensure the organs reach their destinations swiftly, the Junagadh police, led by ASP Harsh Sharma, have created three green corridors. A total of 80 police personnel have been deployed to manage the routes and facilitate smooth transportation.
Understanding Brain Death
Brain death occurs when all brain activity ceases permanently, including the brainstem, which controls essential functions like breathing and heartbeat. In this condition, while the body may continue to function temporarily on life support, recovery is impossible. This state makes organ donation a viable option for saving lives.
A Life-Saving Legacy
Shilaben’s selfless contribution through organ donation highlights the importance of raising awareness about this cause. The effort to transport her organs through green corridors marks a significant step forward for Junagadh, setting an example of community cooperation and compassion.
