Ranchi: In a dramatic turn of events, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren resigned from his post on Wednesday evening following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged land scam. The development throws the state’s political landscape into uncertainty and triggers a race for the top seat.

Soren, who also leads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, surrendered to the ED officials at their Ranchi office earlier today. He was subsequently arrested after hours of questioning regarding his alleged involvement in securing mining leases for himself while holding the Chief Minister’s office, a violation of electoral laws.

“This is a politically motivated witch-hunt by the BJP-led central government,” declared Mahuva Majhi, MP from the JMM party, confirming the arrest and resignation. Soren, she asserted, had maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and cooperated fully with the authorities.

Soren’s resignation comes just days after the Supreme Court refused to quash the ED summons, paving the way for his arrest. The Chief Minister had been embroiled in the land lease controversy for months, facing accusations of granting mining rights to himself in violation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The ED initiated its investigation in 2021 based on a complaint alleging illegal mining activities in the Sahibganj district, where Soren holds a mining lease in his brother’s name. The probe agency had earlier raided multiple locations linked to Soren and his associates, gathering purported evidence of financial irregularities.

With Soren’s resignation, the JMM will have to elect a new leader to head the state government. Several contenders, including Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren, are being speculated to take the mantle. Meanwhile, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is eyeing an opportunity to regain power in the state.

The Jharkhand Governor will now initiate consultations with various political parties to assess the possibility of forming a new government. If no party or coalition manages to secure a majority, fresh elections might be necessary, further deepening the political turmoil in the state.
